Founded in 1945, the first committee of the United Nations General Assembly, the Disarmament and International Security Committee, prioritizes collaboration between all member states to maintain international security. This is done by meeting to tackle contemporary conflicts as well as creating new regulations to ensure future peace. 

    In 2010, a series of protests and uprisings began in Arab states with authoritarian regimes. This global event is now known as the Arab Spring, and would serve as in the inciting incident for the Syrian Civil War. After four countries successfully deposed their oppressive governments, Syria was the next country to witness mass civil protests. Immediately, Syria's then President Bashar Al-Assad responded with deadly force. The capture and torture of dissident teens sparked headlines. Gradually, the conflict erupted into a full blown civil war between civilian militias and the military under Bashar Al-Assad's control. In December of 2012, Bashar Al-Assad began using chemical weapons on his own civilians. During this committee, delegates will discuss various strategies to regulate and end Bashar Al-Assad's usage of chemical warfare.
